Facing the Headwinds: The Challenges

Sixteen neighbourhoods in Hackney are ranked among the 10% most deprived in the country.

Up n Away operates in Hackney, one of the most deprived boroughs in England, where poverty, inequality, and limited access to safe spaces significantly affect the health and wellbeing of children and young people. According to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government’s Indices of Deprivation, sixteen neighbourhoods in Hackney are ranked among the 10% most deprived in the country. Areas such as Hackney Wick, Homerton, Clapton, and Hackney Central face the most acute levels of deprivation, with residents struggling across multiple indicators including low income, poor health, limited education, and lack of access to housing and green space (Archant, 2019).

The impact of deprivation on children and young people is severe: it limits access to safe, structured activities, increases vulnerability to mental health challenges like anxiety and isolation, and reduces exposure to nature and community support. Up n Away works directly with those most affected, offering inclusive programmes that support mental wellbeing, connection to nature, and access to physical activity in a safe, supportive environment. Our work is more essential than ever in light of worsening poverty and shrinking local resources.

Whether by volunteering your time, partnering with us, donating to support our sessions, or sharing our work within your networks, there are many ways to get involved.

Together, we can create a healthier, more hopeful future for vulnerable young people.
